When I started the car, I could see fine. But as I turned the corner to face the sun, my vision was blocked by the dirt on my windshield. What had changed?
The dirt was there all the time. It just wasn’t obvious when I was in the shade–in darkness. But as I changed direction and faced the sun, the dirt actually acted as a barrier, isolating me from anything on the other side.
That’s how sin works in our lives when we choose not to forgive. To wear garments of anger and bitterness. We go for days without noticing, unaware that the dirt clouds and distorts our very lives. We are literally blindsided and apathetic to the fact that we are carrying a weight so heavy, so debilitating, and so unnecessary.
Then, suddenly, something triggers the feelings and memories, and we can think of nothing else. The anger and bitterness isolate us from others … and from God. Until God shines the light of His Son into our lives to reveal the darkness in which we are bathed. Until we choose to forgive and allow the blood of Jesus to wash us clean.
Matthew 5:8 says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
Just like with the windshield, others will see, feel, and respond to our outer garment. What will it be? Filthy rags of bitterness and anger or the cleansed heart of righteousness?
